A pattern that I find myself often following is repeating how empathetic thinking can be used in the health professions field. I feel that instead of explaining the same examples I can come up with different scenarios on how arts can benefit the health field. I feel that I rely on key terms the most. The key terms I reply on are empathetic thinking. I feel as though I can find new ways to address this kind of thinking rather than just following back on the term. I could describe empathic thinking as emotional thinking and open-minded thinking to help get the point across on what this thinking does instead of just using the term. One part of this writing that I find to be a little confusing is by jumping from dental hygiene and art therapy health careers. I address both in my writing but I feel as though I do not tie them together and explain how they are similar as much as I could. A way I could make un-fog this part of my writing could be by incorporating more transitional words. I could do the following: Dental Hygiene and Art Therapy after all are very similar health careers. For instance, dental hygiene needs to understand their patients feel when certain religions are in place and a patient may not want to receive medicine because of their cultural background. Although the professional may believe in the medication, they must understand their patient’s wishes. In art therapy, the therapist needs to put themselves in their patient’s position to better understand what their patient might be going through, setting their own emotions to the side. This statement is much clearer than what I had written in my free draft. “As a dental hygiene major, I find that learning art and music could help improve the care given to patients. Developing knowledge for music and art can help health care providers have a strong understanding of empathetic thinking by exploring emotions through creating art. Science is known to help cure diseases, says Pinker, but isn’t physical health just important as mental health? Art therapy is a career I have been strongly interested in for some time. With art therapy, patients use art materials and the creative process to explore emotions, reduce anxiety, increase self-esteem, and resolve other psychological conflicts.” This also allows me to reduce the number of times I use the key term empathetic thinking and allows me to explain my thoughts further than just following back on my key terms.
